Key Points of Silkie Chicken Feeding Techniques and Daily Rearing Management Methods
Silkie chicken, also known as the black-boned chicken, gets its name because its skin, meat and bones are all black. Its meat is tender and nutritious, making it a traditional poultry breed used for tonifying the body. Silkie chickens have a relatively delicate constitution, and whether they are fed properly directly affects their growth rate and health, so mastering scientific feeding techniques is very important for breeders.
The chick stage is the critical period for feeding. Newly hatched chicks have weak temperature regulation ability, so the brooding house must maintain suitable temperature and humidity, and adjust them gradually as the chicks age. For the first feeding, broken rice or crushed compound feed can be used, together with clean drinking water, feeding small amounts frequently so that every chick can eat feed and drink water.
After entering the growing stage and adult stage, feeding is mainly based on compound feed, commonly made from ingredients such as corn, wheat bran and soybean meal mixed in proportion, with appropriate supplements of green fodder and minerals to meet the nutritional needs for growth and egg production. Farms with the conditions can combine this with free-range rearing, letting the silkie chickens freely forage for grass and insects, which can save part of the feed and also help improve meat quality.
Daily management should keep the coop dry and well ventilated, change the bedding frequently, clean and disinfect regularly, and supply sufficient clean drinking water. Feeding should be done at fixed times and in fixed amounts, and the quality of the feed should be checked to avoid feeding moldy or spoiled feed. At the same time, vaccination and deworming should be carried out according to schedule, and sick chickens should be isolated and handled promptly to prevent the spread of disease.
During the feeding process, attention should also be paid to raising the chickens in separate groups, dividing the flock by size and strength, to avoid uneven growth caused by uneven competition for feed. Overall, as long as the environment is suitable, the nutrition is comprehensive and the management is meticulous, silkie chickens can grow healthily and achieve relatively good breeding benefits.
