The ecological Laiwu black pig is an excellent local pig breed from the Laiwu area of Shandong Province, named for its black coat covering the whole body. Under ecological farming models, this black pig is mostly raised by free-range or semi-free-range methods, and its growing environment is closer to the natural state, so both its meat quality and farming profitability have their own distinctive features.

In terms of breed characteristics, the Laiwu black pig has strong adaptability, tolerates coarse feed, and stands out for both disease resistance and cold tolerance, while the sow's reproductive performance is also relatively good. Its biggest highlight lies in the meat quality: the intramuscular fat content is relatively high, the meat is tender and juicy with a rich aroma, and after stewing it has a mellow, fragrant taste, which has long been recognized by consumers.

In ecological farming, keepers usually rely mainly on grain feeds such as corn, wheat bran and soybean meal, paired with green, juicy forage, and minimize the use of antibiotics and growth-promoting drugs. Some farmers also place the pig pens near orchards and woodlands, letting the pigs graze on green grass during activity, with the manure treated and then returned to the fields, forming a healthy cycle that combines planting and raising, which is in line with the thinking behind ecological models such as raising crabs in rice paddies and rabbits in orchards.

It should be noted that the ecological Laiwu black pig grows relatively slowly, and its raising cycle is longer than that of ordinary commercial pigs, so farming costs and selling prices are correspondingly higher. To raise this pig well, the key is to keep the pens clean and dry, carry out epidemic prevention according to procedures, and at the same time ensure sufficient space for movement and stable feed quality, so that the traditional flavor of the black pig's meat can be retained while still achieving relatively ideal farming returns.
