Ecological black pigs are commercial pigs raised under ecological farming conditions on the basis of local black-haired pig breeds. Common foundation breeds include the Taihu pig, Laiwu black pig and Min pig, among other local black pigs, and they can also be obtained by crossbreeding and improving local breeds with improved breeds. Compared with ordinary commercial white pigs, which grow quickly, ecological black pigs have a longer rearing cycle, but their meat flavor is more widely recognized by the market.

In terms of appearance and performance, ecological black pigs are mostly black-haired or brown-haired, of medium body size, tolerant of coarse feed, and relatively strong in disease resistance and adaptability. Because of the long fattening period, intramuscular fat is deposited more fully, and the meat is firm and tender, fragrant without being greasy, and usually ranks as a mid-to-high-end pork product on the consumer market.

In terms of farming methods, ecological black pigs are often raised using deep-litter bedding systems, free-range rearing under forest, or pen housing combined with exercise yards, with feed based mainly on corn, soybean meal, bran and grasses, while minimizing the use of antibiotics and growth promoters. Farmers with the right conditions can combine rotational grazing in orchards and woodland, and after fermentation treatment, pig manure can be returned to the fields for use, forming a crop-livestock integration cycle that also helps spread out the costs of feed and manure treatment.

Several common issues need attention in farming: fences should be properly built at free-range sites, and epidemic prevention and disinfection should be implemented to prevent the introduction of disease; feed ratios must ensure a balance of protein and energy, otherwise growth will be even slower; and in the sales stage, origin certification and brand building can be used to reflect differentiated value. Overall, ecological black pigs are suitable for moderate-scale raising by farmers who have mountain forest, orchard or farmland resources, and are a feasible choice for the transition from traditional pig farming toward green, ecological practices.
