Glutinous rice is a type of cultivated rice whose endosperm starch is mainly amylopectin, with a very low amylose content, giving the grains strong stickiness and a soft, glutinous texture. By grain shape, glutinous rice can be divided into two major groups, indica glutinous rice and japonica glutinous rice; by growth duration, it is further classified into early, middle and late glutinous rice, and the appropriate type can be chosen locally according to the cropping schedule.

The glutinous rice processed from glutinous paddy is an important raw material for many traditional foods; zongzi, tangyuan, nian gao and ciba are all inseparable from it, and it is also a common raw material for brewing yellow wine and rice wine. In recent years, a number of new glutinous rice varieties and combinations have been bred and promoted in various regions, such as the Zhenuo series, the Shaonuo series and Yunuoyou 16, among others; these varieties each have their own characteristics in growth duration, disease resistance and grain quality, and growers can choose rationally in light of local climate and cultivation conditions.

In terms of cultivation management, glutinous rice is broadly similar to ordinary rice, requiring timely sowing, raising strong seedlings, rational close planting, and good regulation of water and fertilizer. Glutinous rice is relatively sensitive to nitrogen fertilizer; excessive application easily leads to delayed maturity with excessive vegetative growth and lodging, and also affects grain quality, so the principle of promoting early, controlling in the middle and supplementing later should be followed. In the middle and late growth stages, emphasis should be placed on controlling diseases such as rice blast and sheath blight, and moderate water control before harvest helps improve the seed-setting rate and grain quality.

Glutinous rice has a wide range of uses and stable market demand, making it one of the choices for adjusting the planting structure in many regions. When purchasing seeds, one should use formal channels, first understand the suitable planting areas and characteristics of the variety, and expand the area only after a small-scale trial planting has succeeded, which can reduce production risks.
