Zhenongda 454 is a medium-maturing late glutinous rice variety selected by the Department of Agronomy of Zhejiang University from the multiple cross combination Bing 889/Zhong 8029//Tai 202. It was fixed after 4 years and 7 generations of identification and selection in diseased areas. In 1998, trial planting was expanded to more than several tens of thousands of mu, and in March 1999 it passed the approval of the Zhejiang Provincial Variety Approval Committee. Characteristics: Zhenongda 454 has a plant height of about 80 cm, medium tillering ability, slender and flexible stems, many grains per panicle, high seed-setting rate, large and plump grains, green stems at yellow ripeness, oval grains, and yellow husks and panicle tips,

Characteristics

Zhenongda 454 has a plant height of about 80 cm, medium tillering ability, slender and flexible stems, many grains per panicle, high seed-setting rate, large and plump grains, green stems at yellow ripeness, oval grains, and yellow husks and panicle tips, and is relatively easy to thresh. After harvest, the rice grains turn white relatively quickly. The reasons Zhenongda 454 is welcomed by seed companies and farmers in various places are:

1. The panicle type is relatively large, the 1000-grain weight is high, the number of filled grains per panicle is about 70, and the 1000-grain weight is 30 g.

2. Strong disease resistance and good yield stability. In trial plantings of Zhenongda 454 in various places from 1995 to 1998, no rice blast or bacterial blight occurred in the field. According to identification by the Plant Protection Institutes of the academies of agricultural sciences in Zhejiang, Hunan, Guangdong and other provinces, this variety has rice blast resistance of grade 3-7, superior to the control Xiushui 11, and bacterial blight resistance of grade 2-5.

3. Moderate maturity and wide adaptability. This variety is suitable for planting as single-season rice and as continuous-cropping late rice. The results of AMMI model analysis of the national southern regional trial show that this variety is particularly adapted to Zhejiang, Hubei, Shanghai and other provinces and municipalities.

4. Excellent market quality and good glutinous quality. This variety is relatively easy to thresh, and during turning and drying the rice turns into white blocks. The grains are large and white, with good glutinous quality and excellent market quality, and the nian gao made from it tastes good. In 1996, according to inspection by the Rice and Rice Products Quality Monitoring Center of the Ministry of Agriculture, Zhenongda 454 reached the first-grade standard for quality rice in 4 indicators: milled rice rate, grain shape, alkali spreading value, and gel consistency, and reached the second-grade standard for quality rice in 3 indicators: brown rice rate, head rice rate, and amylose content.

Yield performance

In 1996 and 1997, it participated in the Zhejiang Provincial double-season late rice regional trial. The average yields per mu were 4573 kg and 427.3 kg respectively, increasing yield by 4.62% and 9.65% compared with the control variety Xiushui 11. The two-year average yield per mu was 442.3 kg, an increase of 6.99% over the control Xiushui 11, among which the 1997 yield ranked first, with the increase reaching an extremely significant level. In 1998, it participated in the national southern rice region double-season late japonica group regional trial, with an average yield per mu of 480.44 kg, an increase of 9.6% over the control variety Xiushui 11, ranking second in yield, with the increase reaching an extremely significant level. In the same year, in the Zhejiang Provincial double-season late rice production trial, the average yield per mu at 7 sites was 446.6 kg, an increase of 4.22% over the control variety. The whole growth period was 1.7 days shorter than that of the control. In 1999, it will continue to participate in the national southern rice region double-season late japonica group regional trial, while also undergoing production trials. From 1997 to 1998, in production demonstrations in Changxing, Fuyang, Shengzhou and other places in Zhejiang Province, it showed high and stable yields. For example: the Changxing County Seed Farm propagated seed on 33 mu, with a yield per mu reaching 508 kg. The Shengzhou City Seed Farm planted a double-season late rice demonstration plot of 50.73 mu, with an average yield per mu as high as 475.9 kg. In recent years, Zhenongda 454 is expected to become one of the main cultivated glutinous rice varieties in Zhejiang Province.

Cultivation points: This variety belongs to the large-grain type. The key to obtaining high yield is to increase panicle type on the basis of ensuring a certain number of panicles (250,000-280,000), improve the seed-setting rate, and strive for a relatively large number of grains (about 70 grains). Generally, it can be sown at the same time as local late japonica and glutinous varieties. For single-season rice, sow at the end of May and the beginning of June; for double-season rice, sow from June 20-25, with a seedling age of 30-35 days. Before sowing, soak the seeds in a 2000-fold solution of "402" antibacterial agent for 2 days and 2 nights for sterilization treatment, wash clean with clear water, and then sow, in order to prevent bakanae disease. Generally, apply 2500-3000 kg of organic fertilizer per mu. Fertilization in the field should be heavy early and light later, to promote early growth and ensure effective panicles. Stop fertilizing after August 15, so that the rice has green stems at yellow ripeness. This variety also has a relatively high demand for potassium fertilizer. During the growth period, attention should be paid to controlling damage from rice thrips, rice leaf roller, rice planthopper, aphids and others. In water management, irrigate shallowly in the early stage, drain the field moderately in the middle stage, and keep alternately dry and wet in the later stage, so as to reduce the occurrence of sheath blight.
