Sichuan has a warm, humid climate and abundant rice paddies, ponds and ditches, making it very suitable for rice field eels (Monopterus albus) to grow. Local rice field eel farming is fairly common; typical methods include dedicated pond culture and rice paddy polyculture, while some people also set up cages in reservoirs and rivers. Farmers can choose flexibly according to their own water surface conditions. The farming site should be chosen where water is plentiful, water quality is fresh and clean, and drainage and irrigation are convenient. Clear and disinfect the pond before stocking fry. Select fry with normal body color, strong movement, and no injuries or disease. Keep the size as uniform as possible within the same pond to prevent large eels from eating small ones.

In daily management, water quality and feeding are the most critical. Rice field eels prefer warm environments, so in summer pay attention to shading and cooling, and in winter ensure good warmth for overwintering. Regularly add and change new water to keep water quality clean and dissolved oxygen sufficient. Feed mainly on live bait such as earthworms, small trash fish, and minced snail and mussel meat; you can also gradually train them to accept compound feed. Feed at fixed times and in fixed amounts to reduce leftover bait polluting the water.

Rice field eels like to burrow and are good at escaping, so pond banks should be tamped and reinforced, and escape-proof nets must be installed at inlet and outlet points. Patrol the pond frequently. If you find abnormalities such as skin ulceration or reduced feeding, remove and isolate the affected eels promptly, and prevent disease by controlling stocking density and maintaining good water quality.

Rice field eel meat is tender and nutritious, a common ingredient in Sichuan cuisine, and market demand is stable. Master the technical steps above and make full use of local water surface resources, and even small-scale farming can achieve decent returns.
