Complete Guide to Loach Farming Techniques: Key Points on Pond Construction, Feeding, Water Quality and Disease Prevention
The loach is a common small freshwater economic fish, with tender flesh and rich nutrition, high market acceptance and relatively controllable farming costs, making it suitable for artificial farming in ponds, rice paddies, net cages and various other modes.
Pond construction is the foundation of successful loach farming. The site should be chosen where there is abundant water, fresh water quality and convenient drainage and irrigation, and a certain thickness of soft mud should be kept on the pond bottom so that the loach can burrow and rest. Nets should be fitted at the water inlet and outlet, escape-prevention facilities should be set up around the perimeter, and pond clearing and disinfection should be done before stocking fry to reduce pathogens and predators.
Fry selection emphasizes a robust constitution and uniform size; before stocking, they may first undergo temperature acclimation and disinfection treatment to improve the survival rate. The loach has omnivorous feeding habits; besides natural food, formulated feed as well as bran, soybean cake and the like can be given, adhering to fixed times, fixed spots and fixed amounts, and flexibly adjusting according to water temperature and feeding conditions.
Daily management focuses on water quality and disease prevention. Although the loach tolerates low oxygen, the water body still needs to be kept fertile yet fresh; in hot seasons, change the water and aerate in good time, and take shading and cooling measures when necessary. Disease prevention should be the priority: regularly disinfect the water body, feed fresh feed, and isolate and handle any abnormalities promptly. In winter, the water level can be suitably deepened so that the loach can burrow into the mud and overwinter safely.
After several months of rearing, once the loach reaches marketable size, it can be harvested and sold using ground cages and other methods. As long as the key links of pond construction, feeding, water quality and disease prevention are well controlled, the overall returns from loach farming will be better assured.
