The red maple (Acer rubrum) is a large deciduous tree of the Aceraceae family, native to North America, and named for the brilliant red color its leaves turn in autumn. It is one of the most popular colorful-leaf tree species in landscaping. Common cultivars include Autumn Blaze, October Glory, and Red Sunset; different cultivars vary in when they change color, how deep the leaf color is, and their adaptability, so the choice can be matched to local climate conditions.

For cultivating red maple, choose a plot with ample sunlight, relatively high ground, and good drainage; the ideal soil is a fertile, loose, slightly acidic sandy loam. Planting is generally done before bud break in spring or after leaf fall in autumn. Before transplanting, dig the planting hole and work in decomposed organic fertilizer as a base fertilizer; after planting, water thoroughly to settle the roots, which helps the roots closely contact the soil and improves the survival rate.

For water and fertilizer management, the soil should be kept moist during the growing season but must never become waterlogged; drain promptly during the rainy season to avoid root rot caused by prolonged soaking. Fertilizing can be done together with watering; in the early growth stage, nitrogen fertilizer is used mainly to promote the growth of branches and leaves, and before autumn, appropriately increasing phosphorus and potassium fertilizer can make the leaves color more evenly and vividly red.

In routine care, promptly prune out dead branches, diseased branches, and overly dense branches to keep the tree shape attractive and ensure ventilation and light penetration. Common insect pests of red maple include aphids and longhorn beetles, while diseases mostly appear as leaf spots; when found, promptly remove diseased leaves and spray the appropriate targeted pesticide. Cleaning up fallen leaves in autumn and winter can reduce the overwintering population of pests and diseases.

The red maple has a tall, upright form and a long ornamental season in autumn, making it suitable for planting as a street tree, shade tree, and park landscape tree. It should be noted that whether the autumn leaves turn vividly red is closely related to the diurnal temperature difference, light intensity, and soil pH; before introducing the species, one should fully understand the characteristics of the cultivar and make a long-term care plan.
