How to Grow Azaleas: Master the Key Points for Abundant Flowers and Lush Foliage
Azalea is the collective name for plants in the genus Rhododendron of the family Ericaceae, also known as yingshanhong (mountain red), and is one of China's traditional famous flowers. Common cultivated types include spring azaleas, summer azaleas, eastern azaleas and western azaleas, with flower colors ranging from red, pink, white and purple to many others. They are suitable both for planting in the ground to accent a courtyard and for growing in pots on a balcony.
To grow azaleas well, soil is the foundation. They prefer loose, fertile, well-drained acidic soil and dislike alkaline and heavy clay soil; a mix of leaf mold, pine needle soil and the like can be used. They like a semi-shaded environment and fear scorching sun. In spring and autumn they can receive plenty of soft light, while in midsummer they need appropriate shading, along with good air circulation.
Watering should follow the principle of watering when dry and letting them dry out between waterings. Azalea roots are fine and delicate, fearing both drought and waterlogging; long-term excessive moisture easily causes root rot. Tap water in the north tends to be alkaline, so it can be left to stand for a few days before use, and a small amount of ferrous sulfate can also be added regularly to maintain soil acidity. Fertilizing should be done with light, frequent applications, avoiding strong or raw fertilizer; apply dilute liquid fertilizer during the growing season, and appropriately increase phosphorus and potassium fertilizer at the bud stage.
In daily care, if the leaves turn yellow, it is mostly related to soil becoming alkaline or iron deficiency; bud drop is often caused by dry air, sudden temperature changes or improper watering, so the cause needs to be identified and adjustments made promptly. After flowering, cutting off spent flowers and dead or weak branches can reduce nutrient consumption. Most varieties are not hardy against severe cold in winter, so in northern regions they should be moved indoors or given insulation measures.
