Have you used the potted chili growing method to grow chilies on your balcony? You may have heard of the world's hottest chili — the Carolina Reaper. Eating just one small one can have you rolling on the ground, and even downing several cans of water won't ease the heat. But now a chef has bred an even hotter chili, and eating just one of these chilies could even kill you!
A chef named Mike in North Wales has more than 7 years of experience growing chilies, and in recent years he developed a chili called the "Dragon's Breath" whose heat exceeds 2.4 million Scoville Heat Units, at least 200,000 units higher than the Carolina Reaper's 2.2 million...
If you eat this small chili, it is very likely to trigger anaphylactic shock, burn your respiratory tract and even lock it up so that you cannot breathe, ultimately leading to death.
The pepper spray generally used by the military has a heat of about 2 million units, and even that figure alone is enough to torment criminals... so you can see that a heat of 2.4 million is definitely not to be trifled with.
Mike himself actually tried the "Dragon's Breath" chili in person. At the time he dabbed just a little on the tip of his tongue, and the burning sensation spread across his tongue and kept burning without stopping; within just 10 seconds Mike couldn't take it anymore and kept wanting to spit it out.
The purpose of the chili that Mike developed in collaboration with Nottingham Trent University is of course not to be eaten by consumers, but to be used in medicine. This is because using this chili can numb a patient's skin, causing the skin to temporarily lose sensation, which is a great solution for patients who are allergic to anesthetic agents.
What's even more frightening is that because this chili is so hot, even the containers used to store it have to be specially made.
