White peony (Paeonia lactiflora) is a perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Paeonia in the Ranunculaceae family. Its dried fleshy roots are used as medicine, and it is a traditional, commonly used bulk Chinese medicinal material, mainly produced in Anhui, Zhejiang, Sichuan and other places. It prefers a sunny, warm and humid climate and has strong cold tolerance, but it fears waterlogging and has certain requirements for soil conditions.

For planting white peony, it is advisable to choose a sunny plot with deep soil layers, loose and fertile sandy loam soil with good drainage, and continuous cropping must be avoided. Before planting, apply sufficient base fertilizer in combination with deep plowing. Propagation is mainly by dividing the buds, and seed propagation can also be used for raising seedlings, but seed propagation grows slowly and has a long cycle, so it is rarely used in production. Planting is mostly carried out in autumn. After separating the root heads with buds, dig holes at suitable row and plant spacing for planting, cover with soil, firm it, and water thoroughly.

During the growing period, good management of intertillage, weeding and topdressing should be carried out. The amount of fertilizer should be gradually increased, light at first and heavier later. In the rainy season, clear the ditches and drain water promptly to prevent root rot. After the plants bud, the flower buds should be removed early so that nutrients are concentrated for root growth. At the same time, attention should be paid to preventing and controlling diseases such as leaf spot, rust and root rot, as well as underground pests such as white grubs. Diseased plants should be removed and handled promptly when found.

White peony generally needs to be cultivated for several years and is harvested when the roots are thick and plump. After harvesting, wash the roots, and process them into commercial medicinal material through procedures such as peeling, boiling and sun-drying. In addition to medicinal use, white peony has large and brightly colored flowers and can also be cultivated as an ornamental plant, having both economic and ornamental value. In the planting process, as long as the key steps of site selection, propagation and field management are done well, a relatively ideal harvest can be obtained.
