Potato disease control refers to the preventive and curative measures taken against common diseases during the potato growing period. Potatoes are susceptible to infection by pathogens such as fungi, bacteria and viruses. Common diseases include late blight, early blight, viral diseases, ring rot and common scab. Once an epidemic occurs, it weakens plant vigor and affects tuber yield and quality.

In terms of pathogen type, fungal diseases are the most widespread. Late blight favors low temperatures and high humidity, spreads rapidly in rainy seasons, and often produces water-soaked lesions on leaves, with mold visible on diseased areas under high humidity; early blight mainly appears as round lesions with concentric rings. Bacterial diseases such as ring rot and blackleg are spread mainly through seed potatoes and wounds, often causing plant wilting and tuber rot. Viral diseases are mostly transmitted by aphids and appear as mosaic, crinkling and plant stunting.

Control should be based on prevention first and integrated measures. Before sowing, use virus-free seed potatoes and disinfect cutting knives, which can cut off the transmission routes of seed-borne diseases; practice crop rotation when planting, avoiding continuous cropping with solanaceous crops such as tomato, to reduce the accumulation of pathogens in the soil; during the growing period, maintain rational close planting, drain water promptly, control field humidity, and remove diseased plants as early as possible and carry them out of the field for disposal.

Chemical control should seize the key periods; for example, late blight is best controlled by spraying protectively before the disease occurs or when the first central diseased plants appear, and different active ingredients should be rotated to delay the development of resistance. Overall, only by combining agricultural measures with chemical measures can potato disease control achieve good results.
