During bayberry season, the purplish-red juice easily splashes onto clothes or stains your hands when you eat them. Bayberry juice contains natural pigments of the anthocyanin type, which are deeply colored and strongly adhering. Once they get on clothing, washing with plain water alone often fails to remove them; you need to use the right method to clean them properly.

When clothing has just been stained with bayberry juice, it is best to treat it as soon as possible before the stain dries. A common approach is to first sprinkle some table salt on the stain, add a small amount of water to moisten it, then rub gently so the salt helps absorb the pigment, and finally rinse with water. You can also apply white vinegar to the stain, let it sit for a few minutes, and then wash it as usual. If traces remain, you can clean with baking soda and warm water; for white cotton clothing, you can also soak it in a color-safe bleach product, but first check the garment's washing instructions to avoid damaging the fabric.

Bayberry stains that have already dried look darker and cling more firmly. You can first soak them in warm water for a while, and once the stain has softened, apply a neutral laundry detergent and rub gently repeatedly, repeating several times if necessary. Note that delicate fabrics such as silk and wool should not be rubbed vigorously, nor are they suitable for bleaching products; it is best to treat them gently in a localized area or send them to a dry cleaner.

For bayberry juice on your hands, just wash them several times with hand soap and warm water, or dip a small amount of table salt and rub gently between your fingers to help remove the color. The color on your lips and tongue will generally fade naturally within a few days; this is a normal phenomenon, so there is no need to worry.

The key to washing out bayberry juice is to act early; the fresher the stain, the easier it is to remove. Before treating it, it is best to test on an inconspicuous part of the garment to confirm it will not fade before washing a larger area. This way you can both remove the stain and better protect the clothing.
