Pea shoot growing technique is simple, and it can be easily cultivated even on a home balcony
Pea shoots are tender sprout vegetables grown from pea seeds, also called pea tips in some places, with a crisp, tender texture and a fresh fragrance. They can be grown in garden soil or produced without soil using seedling trays. The growth cycle is short, management is not difficult, and they are suitable for home balcony planting as well as small-scale batch production.
Before planting, first select plump seeds free of damage or mold, soak them in clean water, and once the seeds have absorbed enough water, sow them into a loose, airy substrate or seedling tray. After sowing, cover with a thin layer of soil and keep moist. In the early stage, shade appropriately to encourage uniform germination, and after the seedlings emerge, gradually let them receive light.
For routine management, peas prefer a cool climate. Too high a temperature easily causes leggy growth and disease, so keep the environment ventilated and avoid stuffy, humid heat. For watering, follow the principle of small amounts given frequently, keeping the substrate moist but not waterlogged to prevent seed and root rot. When light is sufficient, the seedlings are sturdier and the leaf color is deeper green.
When the seedlings grow to around 10 cm and the tender tips at the top are bright green, they can be harvested in batches. After harvesting, take care to replenish water and nutrients; some plants can continue to sprout side shoots. Because they grow quickly and have relatively few pests and diseases, pea shoots you grow yourself are safer to eat, and the freshly picked tender shoots are best for stir-frying or making soup.
