Forex trading refers to the act of investors buying and selling the currencies of different countries to profit from exchange rate fluctuations. Such trading is not inherently illegal in itself; the key lies in through what channel and in what manner it is conducted. Foreign exchange business handled through licensed financial institutions is a regulated, compliant operation, whereas leveraged trading on unqualified platforms that bypasses regulation may cross the legal red line.

From the perspective of legal channels, individuals can buy and sell foreign exchange at banks and other legitimate financial institutions, exchanging foreign currency within the prescribed annual facilitation quota, and this is permitted. The spot forex trading business offered by some banks also has a corresponding regulatory framework and is suitable for investors whose purpose is asset allocation or exchange rate risk management. This type of trading has low leverage levels and relatively transparent rules.

What needs to be guarded against are the various overseas forex trading platforms on the internet. Most of them have not obtained a business license in the country, yet they attract clients with the gimmick of high leverage and high returns, and the movement of funds lacks supervision. Once a platform absconds or is suspected of fraud, investors often find it very difficult to recover their losses. In addition, exchanging currency through underground banks or helping others split large foreign exchange transactions may also constitute illegality.

To judge whether a certain forex trading channel is reliable, you can first check whether the platform holds a license issued by a regulatory authority, whether the funds are held in custody by a legitimate institution, and whether the promotional materials contain exaggerated claims such as guaranteed profits with no losses. Overall, forex trading is not something that cannot be done; rather, it must be conducted within legal boundaries. Only when ordinary investors participate through legitimate bank channels can they obtain the protection they deserve.
