What Do Hedgehogs Eat? Understanding Hedgehog Diet and Feeding Essentials
The hedgehog is a classic omnivore, but its diet consists mainly of animal-based food. In the wild, it favors all kinds of insects, such as beetles, moth larvae, earthworms and snails, and occasionally feeds on bird eggs, nestlings, frogs, and the fruits and seeds of plants. Hedgehogs are mostly nocturnal and forage around relying on their keen sense of smell.
Under captive conditions, hedgehogs can be fed live insects such as mealworms and superworms, as well as some animal-based foods like lean meat and eggs, paired with fruits and vegetables such as apples, bananas and carrots to supplement vitamins. Common commercial hedgehog food or high-quality cat food available on the market can also be used as a daily staple, as the nutrition is relatively balanced.
When feeding hedgehogs, attention must be paid to food selection. Greasy, spicy and overly salty foods are all unsuitable, and dairy products such as milk easily cause gastrointestinal upset, so they are generally not recommended either. Food should be kept fresh, leftover scraps should be cleaned up promptly, and clean drinking water should always be provided; food and water bowls are best washed daily to reduce the occurrence of gastrointestinal diseases.
It should be noted that in many regions hedgehogs are protected animals, and casually catching wild hedgehogs to keep may violate regulations. If you plan to breed them, you should first learn about the relevant local policies, obtain breeding stock through proper channels, and only start once you have mastered scientific raising methods, so that the hedgehogs can grow up healthily.
