Is the hedgehog a protected animal?

Hedgehogs often inhabit mountains, forests, grasslands, farmland, shrublands and other places, and are widely distributed across Asia, Europe and Africa in the "Old World", and have been artificially introduced to New Zealand, where the hedgehog, as an introduced animal, has no natural enemies, so excessive breeding has gradually turned it into a nuisance. Let's take a look below at whether the hedgehog is a protected animal!

Is the hedgehog a protected animal?

The hedgehog is a protected animal. As a protected wild animal of Beijing, the common hedgehog has become one of the 136 species of Class II protected animals and is protected by law. This species has been included in the "List of Terrestrial Wild Animals under State Protection that Are Beneficial or of Important Economic or Scientific Research Value" issued by China's State Forestry Administration on August 1, 2000. Illegally hunting, killing or trafficking wild animals under state protection will be subject to legal sanctions.

What procedures are required to raise hedgehogs?

To breed hedgehogs, you need to obtain a "Wild Animal Domestication and Breeding License" and a "Wild Animal Business License" from the forestry department. Without these two certificates, their sale and transport are illegal, and once caught, they will be confiscated, fined, or even sentenced to imprisonment. Moreover, farms selling special animals must also have an "Animal Epidemic Prevention Qualification Certificate" issued by the animal husbandry department, otherwise it violates regulations, the products cannot be used for breeding, and there will also be problems in future production and sales.

How do you get the certificates for raising hedgehogs?

1. The applicant submits an application to the county forestry bureau, reporting the breeding scale, technology, funds, market analysis and other relevant content in a feasibility report, and at the same time providing proof of the legal source of the hedgehog breeding stock and photos of the breeding site.

2. Then the county forestry bureau's Wildlife and Plant Protection Management Station conducts an on-site verification. If the verification confirms that the conditions are met, the applicant fills out an application form for domesticating and breeding wild animals and for selling, purchasing and utilizing wild animals or their products (in duplicate).

3. Then the county forestry bureau's Wildlife and Plant Protection Management Station submits the application, application form, feasibility report and other relevant materials to the municipal forestry bureau's Wildlife Protection Section for review and approval.

4. After the municipal bureau approves it as qualified, the "two certificates" are issued. In addition, after the two certificates are processed, you should also go to the local industry and commerce department to apply for an individual business or private enterprise business license.
