How Pineapples Grow: A Full Guide from Planting to Fruiting
The pineapple is a perennial evergreen herb in the genus Ananas of the family Bromeliaceae. Many people assume it grows on trees, but in fact the pineapple grows close to the ground, with the fruit emerging from the center of the plant. The pineapple plant is short with a very short stem, and its slender leaves are arranged in a layered rosette. The fruit develops from the flower stalk that pushes up from the middle of the leaf rosette.
In commercial production, pineapples are rarely grown from seed; they are mostly propagated vegetatively from crowns, suckers and similar offsets, meaning the top of the fruit or a shoot from the plant is cut off and replanted. After planting, the offset first grows roots and leaves and gradually forms a new clump. Once growth is vigorous enough, a flower stalk emerges from the center and produces a cluster of small purplish-red flowers. After the flowers fade, many small fruits gradually swell and fuse together, ultimately forming the pineapple, which is a multiple fruit.
Pineapples favor a warm, humid climate and are mainly distributed in tropical and subtropical regions. In China they are grown in relatively large amounts in Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, China and Yunnan. They like abundant sunlight and have fairly strong drought tolerance, but they are not cold-hardy and cannot tolerate frost. They are best planted in loose, fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Because the roots are shallow and prone to waterlogging, care must be taken to prevent water accumulation during cultivation.
The pineapple's growth cycle is long: from planting to harvest usually takes one to two years, with the exact time varying by variety and management conditions. For home growing, the crown cut from a leftover pineapple can be dried until the wound calluses, rooted in water, and then moved into soil in a pot, which lets you enjoy the fun of growing it and also gives good ornamental value. As long as the temperature is suitable, sunlight is ample and the soil does not become waterlogged, the pineapple will gradually grow and fruit successfully.
