Growing China Asters This Way Gives Abundant, Vivid Blooms: Master the Variety Features and Care Methods
The China aster (Callistephus chinensis) is an annual or biennial herbaceous flower in the Asteraceae family, genus Callistephus, also known as Jiangxi wax and July chrysanthemum. It originated in China, and is now widely cultivated in various regions. Its flower heads are terminal on the branch tips, with rich colors including purple, blue, red, pink, white and more. The plant form is compact, and the ornamental period is mostly concentrated in summer and autumn.
By plant height, China asters can be divided into dwarf, medium and tall types. Dwarf types are suitable for pot cultivation and flowerbed edging, while tall types are often used to arrange flower borders or as cut flowers. By petal form, there are also flat-petal, tube-petal and other distinctions. Single-petal forms are light and natural, while double-petal forms are full and vivid. Suitable varieties can be chosen according to the purpose.
China asters like a sunny, cool and well-ventilated environment, and are suitable for planting in loose, fertile, well-drained soil. During the growing period, keep the soil moist but not waterlogged; too much watering easily causes root rot. Before budding and flowering, appropriately supplement with phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, which can make the flower colors more vivid and the flowers more numerous. Propagation is mainly by sowing, mostly carried out in spring; after seedlings emerge, thin and transplant them in time.
It should be noted that China asters avoid continuous cropping. Planting in the same plot or same pot of soil year after year easily leads to weaker growth and more diseases, so it is best to rotate planting locations or replace the soil with new soil each year. During high temperature and rainy summer, do a good job of drainage and disease prevention, and promptly clean up spent flowers and diseased leaves. China asters have a long flowering period and strong adaptability, and whether used for courtyard flowerbeds or balcony pots, they have a good ornamental effect.
