Hydroponic Alocasia (Dumb Cane) Growing Methods and Precautions
Hydroponic Alocasia refers to a soilless cultivation method in which the Araceae plant Alocasia is transferred from soil cultivation to clean water culture. Its leaves are broad and glossy green, and its stems are thick and upright. After being transferred to hydroponics, its roots become white and translucent. Placed in a living room or study, it is both fresh and attractive, and is cleaner and less troublesome than soil culture, which is why it is very popular among home gardeners.
The key to care lies in changing the water and providing light. In spring and autumn, the water is generally changed once a week. When summer temperatures are high, the frequency of water changes can be appropriately increased, while in winter the interval should be lengthened. When changing the water, the water temperature should be close to room temperature, and the water level should be suitable for submerging most of the roots while leaving a small section for breathing. Alocasia likes bright, indirect light, so placing it indoors in a spot with plenty of light but no prolonged direct sun exposure is more suitable.
Root rot and algae growth in the water are the most common problems encountered during hydroponic cultivation. Once the roots are found to be blackened and soft, or the water smells bad, the rotted parts should be trimmed off in time, the roots rinsed, and clean containers and fresh water used for renewed cultivation. Green algae appearing on the bottle walls is mostly related to excessive light. In addition to changing the water frequently, you can also switch to a dark or opaque container to reduce algae growth at the source.
It is especially important to note that the sap of Alocasia contains irritating substances. When changing water and pruning, it is best to wear gloves to avoid direct skin contact. If there are children or pets at home, the plant should be placed out of reach. As long as the water is clean and the light is suitable, hydroponic Alocasia can maintain a fresh and upright condition for a long time.
