What to Do About Root Rot in Hydroponic Alocasia: Causes and Solutions
Causes of Root Rot in Hydroponic Alocasia
When growing Alocasia hydroponically, root rot can occur as a result of improper handling by growers during the hydroponic setup.
During water culture, it is possible to simply clean the plant and then place it directly into water. If the roots are not washed and no disinfection is done when setting up the hydroponic culture, the effect may look fine for a short time, but in the later stages of growth root rot becomes very likely.
In addition, when caring for Alocasia, root rot can also occur due to improper practices. First, during cultivation the water may not be changed for a long time, causing changes in water quality, making it hard to keep the pH balanced, which leads to root rot in Alocasia. Second, insufficient light can cause pests and diseases on the leaves of Alocasia, along with severe root rot.
What to Do About Root Rot in Hydroponic Alocasia
First, an Alocasia with root rot needs to have the rotten roots dealt with first. Take the Alocasia plant out, trim away the already rotted roots. You can use scissors directly; after cutting off the rotten roots, you can cut off all the branches and leaves, leaving only the healthy roots. After trimming, the Alocasia needs to be cleaned; you can rinse it in clean water, and after washing off all the soil and the like, disinfect the roots by soaking them in a carbendazim solution. Then rinse with clean water and place in a ventilated spot to dry. After drying, the Alocasia can be replanted.
Second, the replanted Alocasia must be cared for carefully, with good water and fertilizer management and reasonable light. A replanted Alocasia should recover after about a month of care. If it is still wilted and yellow, and the roots have become soft, then the treatment has failed and it needs to be discarded.
