Lucky bamboo, also known as wan shou zhu, is an evergreen foliage plant of the genus Dracaena. It gets its name because its stems are straight and its nodes are clearly defined, making it look much like bamboo. In the pictures, its leaves are lance-shaped and a deep, glossy green, and its stems are upright or coiled into shapes; the whole plant has a clean, elegant form and is very suitable for display at home.

Most common lucky bamboo are green-leaved varieties, but there are also gold-edged and silver-edged varieties whose leaf margins carry yellow-white stripes. The "lucky turn bamboo" often seen on the market is in fact made by artificially bending and shaping the stems of ordinary lucky bamboo. By comparing pictures of different varieties, you can see the differences in leaf color and plant shape quite directly.

From pictures of healthy plants, you can tell that well-growing lucky bamboo has emerald, spreading leaves, and when grown in water its roots are white and clean; the water level should just cover the roots. It likes a warm, humid environment with diffused light, and fears strong direct sun and low-temperature freeze damage. In daily care, just change the water and keep the water clean, and it will generally stay in good condition.

If the lucky bamboo at home shows yellowing leaves, spots or wilting, you can first compare it with pictures to make a preliminary judgment about the problem, then check whether the light is too strong, the water quality has deteriorated or the temperature is too low. After timely adjustments, most plants can gradually recover. Looking at pictures and comparing them often is very helpful for beginners to grow lucky bamboo well.
