How to Propagate Lucky Bamboo: Turn One Stalk into Two

Flowers & Gardening 0 views
This is a plant with extremely strong feng shui symbolism. Some flower lovers who enjoy growing plants with very auspicious meanings are especially fond of keeping a few pots at home. But because it keeps growing longer and longer, some people find it unattractive. Can it be cut so that one stalk becomes two and both still survive?

1. Preparing the tools:

Prepare a sharp knife for cutting the lucky bamboo. Then prepare a container to hold the stalk that has been separated from it. Since this plant is rather slender and tall, it is best to prepare a relatively slim, tall vase. Finally, you also need to prepare a candle, or glue, tape, a rubber band, or similar items.

2. Splitting:

Take a long, healthy bamboo stalk free of disease, and use the knife to split it cleanly starting from the middle, making sure the lower half that is split retains 3 to 4 growth nodes.

3. Putting it in the vase:

1. Fill the prepared vase about half full or more with water. Do not put in too much water, so that water does not overflow after the bamboo stalk is placed in; you can also add the stalk first and then pour in the water. Throw the split upper half directly into the vase. The upper half with leaves will grow roots on its own after a week.

2. Keep the remaining lower half and seal its wound with a candle or glue, or you can directly wrap the wound with plastic wrap and tighten it with a rubber band. Then place the lower half into the vase as well. The lower half takes longer to root, requiring a wait of one month. After one month, we can see tender green shoots growing from its nodes.

4. Notes:

1. Normally just top up the water; there is no need to change the water. After roots have grown, change the water and clean the vase, and after that you can stop changing the water and simply keep topping it up.

2. The temperature should be maintained between 16°C and 25°C. Too low a temperature will make the plant prone to dying.
