How to Grow Hydroponic Lucky Bamboo in Winter So It Survives the Cold Safely

1. Temperature

Hydroponic lucky bamboo is very sensitive to cold, so before winter arrives you need to move it indoors in good time. If you want it to keep growing through winter, raise the indoor temperature to around 20°C.

If you place it in an environment of 10°C-13°C, it will stop growing and enter dormancy, and then it will grow quickly again once spring comes the following year.

If the temperature is between 5°C-10°C, it may suffer frost damage.

If the temperature is below 5°C, it will very likely freeze to death.

So how do you keep it warm?

Friends in the north usually have heating at home, so you can put it in a room above 10°C and it will survive the winter safely.

Friends in the south do not have heating at home, so you need to give it a warm coat. The method is very simple: first find some old warm autumn and winter clothing, cut it open, wrap it around the outside of the hydroponic container, and secure it with string or something else. Next, use old newspaper to gently wrap the stems above as well. At this point, be careful not to seal the top, and the newspaper should be slightly taller than the stems. This will help keep it warm.

2. Changing the Water

Keeping the temperature right alone is not enough; besides that, we also need to change its water.

You do not need to change the water very often, once every 20-30 days is enough. When changing the water, be careful not to add nutrient solution; ordinary water is all that is needed. In addition, before changing the water, test the water temperature first to make sure it is around 20°C. If the temperature is too low, it may damage the plant.

3. Light

Although its physiological activity is not very active in winter, it still needs a certain amount of sunlight.

We can choose a relatively warm day, take off its warm coat, place it by a window where it can catch the sun, and let it receive some light. When evening comes, put its warm coat back on.

4. Wind Protection

If you encounter cold, windy days, use newspaper to plug the opening left at the top of the warm coat as well, then poke a few small holes in it for ventilation.

As long as you do the above 4 things well, gardening friends no longer need to worry that hydroponic lucky bamboo will not make it through the cold winter.
