When and how to prune plum trees - you should know that plums have strong adaptability to climate, are not demanding about soil, grow quickly, produce high yields, and have high economic value. Besides being eaten fresh, they can also be made into canned goods, candied fruit and other processed foods. Many people stew plums with rock sugar to soothe the throat and clear the voice, while in Eastern Europe plums are used to brew plum brandy.

Plums are rich in amino acids, vitamin B12 and other nutrients, and can also effectively promote gastrointestinal motility and aid digestion. Taiwan's main production areas are concentrated in Taichung, Miaoli, Hsinchu, Nantou, Hualien and Yilan counties.

Common varieties
Taiwan's plums are mainly varieties introduced from the mainland, chiefly as follows:
Shalian plum: the skin is red and smooth, the flesh is yellow, and it tastes sour rather than sweet; processing varieties can also be eaten raw once ripe. It is mainly found in Zhuoxi Township, Hualien County and Haiduan Township, Chishang Township and Luye Township, Taitung County.
Red-fleshed plum: also called blood-root plum, it is the best material for eating fresh and for making fruit wine and jam. The skin is red, the flesh is blood-red, and the bloom is pronounced; in fully ripe fruit the flesh is purple, with low acidity and high sweetness, but the crispness disappears. It is mainly found in Ren'ai Township, Nantou County and Tai'an Township, Zhuolan Township and Sanyi Township, Miaoli County.

When selecting plums, you can check by looking at the surface to see whether the skin is smooth; those without wrinkles are best. If the surface is rough and oddly shaped, do not buy them. The flesh must be firm, ideally neither too soft nor too hard; if it is too soft, it may already be overripe and will not keep long.
