The Taihe Silkie chicken originates from Taihe County, Ji'an City, Jiangxi Province. It is a fine local chicken breed with a long history in China, and because it was once raised in large numbers in the Wushan area of the locality, it is also called the Wushan chicken. It combines meat, egg and medicinal value, enjoys considerable renown at home and abroad, and has now been included in the national list of livestock and poultry genetic resources for protection.

The most striking feature of the Taihe Silkie chicken is that the whole body is black: the skin, flesh, bones and internal organs are mostly black, and folk tradition often sums this up as ten complete characteristics, including silky feathers, a crest-like tuft on the head, greenish ears, a beard, five claws, feathered feet, as well as black skin, black flesh, black bones and black internal organs. Adult chickens are medium to small in size, with feathers as white as silk, and their distinctive appearance also gives them considerable ornamental appeal.

In terms of practical value, the Taihe Silkie chicken has tender meat and a delicious flavor, contains relatively rich amino acids and various mineral elements, and is a traditional nourishing food, often used for making soup and stews. The use of silkie chicken in traditional Chinese medicine has a long history, and some traditional nourishing patent medicines also use silkie chicken as their main ingredient, so its market value is usually higher than that of ordinary meat chickens.

The methods for raising Taihe Silkie chickens are broadly similar to those for ordinary domestic chickens, but silkies have relatively weaker vitality and disease resistance, so temperature control, ventilation and hygiene management during the brooding stage are especially critical. In daily rearing, attention should be paid to matching feed nutrition, controlling stocking density, and carrying out vaccination and coop disinfection properly, so as to effectively raise the survival rate and egg production rate.

Overall, the Taihe Silkie chicken combines ornamental, edible and medicinal value, has good farming prospects, and is suitable for moderate development on the basis of mastering brooding techniques and disease prevention measures. It is a highly distinctive local chicken breed resource.
