Corydalis yanhusuo, also known as yuanhu, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the genus Corydalis of the family Papaveraceae. Its dried tubers are a commonly used Chinese medicinal material, traditionally used for promoting blood circulation, moving qi and relieving pain. It is mainly produced in Zhejiang, and is also cultivated in Jiangsu, Anhui, Shaanxi and other places. It prefers a cool and humid climate and is afraid of high temperatures and direct strong light; its main growth activity is concentrated in the winter and spring seasons.

For cultivating Corydalis yanhusuo, it is advisable to choose sandy loam with higher terrain, good drainage and loose, fertile soil. Continuous cropping should be avoided, and a preceding crop of gramineous plants is preferable. When preparing the land, plow the soil deeply, apply sufficient decomposed organic fertilizer as a base fertilizer, and make high beds to facilitate drainage and prevent waterlogging from causing tuber rot.

Propagation is mainly by tubers, generally sown in autumn. Select healthy tubers of moderate size and free from disease and damage, open furrows at a certain row spacing and plant them in rows, covering with just a few cm of soil. After sowing, the bed surface can be covered with rice straw or fallen leaves, which both keeps warmth and moisture and suppresses weed growth.

In terms of field management, keeping the soil moist in winter is beneficial to root development. After seedlings emerge in early spring, topdress in time; cultivation and weeding should be shallow to avoid damaging the tubers. During the spring rainy season, clear the ditches and drain water in time to prevent waterlogging in the field. Common diseases include downy mildew, sclerotinia and others, which can be prevented through crop rotation, rational close planting and timely removal of diseased plants.

Harvesting can begin after the aboveground stems and leaves wither. Choose a sunny day to dig up the tubers, remove the fibrous roots and soil, steam or boil them promptly and then dry them in the sun for convenient storage and medicinal use. Mastering the key points of site selection, sowing, management and processing is the key to growing Corydalis yanhusuo well.
