Osmanthus Fragrance Under the Full Mid-Autumn Moon: The Perfect Season to Admire Osmanthus
Around the Mid-Autumn Festival each year, osmanthus flowers (Osmanthus fragrans) bloom one after another in many places, filling the air with a sweet, delicate fragrance. The saying "osmanthus fragrance under the full Mid-Autumn moon" describes exactly the beautiful scene of this season. Osmanthus is a traditional famous flower of our country, and its blooming coincides with the night of the full moon. Admiring the moon together with enjoying the osmanthus fragrance has long been an important part of folk Mid-Autumn celebrations.
Osmanthus generally blooms in autumn. Cool temperatures and a widening difference between day and night temperatures favor flower bud differentiation and blooming, so the flowering period often overlaps with the time around the Mid-Autumn Festival. However, osmanthus is quite sensitive to temperature. If the autumn temperature is on the high side that year, flowering may be delayed and the fragrance may be less impressive. This is often the reason why some osmanthus trees bloom without fragrance.
Common osmanthus varieties mainly include Jingu (golden osmanthus), Yingu (silver osmanthus), Dangui (orange osmanthus) and Sijigui (four-season osmanthus). Jingu has golden-yellow flowers and a rich fragrance, Yingu has whitish flowers and an elegant scent, Dangui has orange-red flowers and strong ornamental value, and Sijigui can bloom several times a year but its fragrance is relatively faint. Planting different varieties together can give a courtyard more depth and variety in autumn.
Osmanthus is suitable both for planting in the ground in courtyards and for growing as bonsai placed on a balcony or in a yard. In daily care, pay attention to providing sufficient light, watering only when the soil is dry and allowing it to dry out between waterings, and supplementing nutrients appropriately during the growing season. Also watch for common pests such as scale insects and red spider mites, and take timely control measures once they are found. In addition, fresh osmanthus flowers can be used to make traditional foods such as osmanthus tea and osmanthus cake. Their unique fragrance makes them very popular.
