When are osmanthus seeds harvested, and when are they planted? If any readers know, please help explain.

Zhongdi Network has compiled information on harvesting, storing, and sowing osmanthus seeds, listed below for readers' reference.

         1. Harvest time for osmanthus seeds:
Osmanthus tree seeds are generally ready from the end of May to early June, when the outer skin of the seed turns from green to blue-black and the seeds begin to fall from the tree. Collect plump seeds from the tree or the ground.

  2. How to process osmanthus seeds after harvest:
The seeds can be mixed with river sand and rubbed to remove the outer seed coat, until no fleshy residue remains on the yellow-white bony seed shell, and empty, shriveled seeds are removed by floating.

  3. How to store osmanthus seeds:
Mix the washed osmanthus seeds with moist sand and store them in a large flower pot or water vat. Cover the pot or vat opening with glass (or a wooden board) to retain moisture and prevent mice. In winter, keep them indoors as long as they do not freeze. Keep the sand moist throughout storage. In the early stage of sand storage, the sand's water content should be 10%, and in the middle and later stages it can be increased to 50%.

  4. Sowing time for osmanthus seeds:
The best sowing time for osmanthus seeds is from February to early April of the following year. Sow and raise seedlings only when the seeds have cracked open and the white sprout is showing.

  5. Requirements for sowing osmanthus seeds:
Osmanthus seeds are generally sown in drills. After sowing, cover with a small amount of rice straw and provide shade. In the same year, the seedlings can reach 15-20 cm in height. After 2 years of cultivation in the nursery, transplant in the spring of the 3rd year, and they will bloom after 10 years.

Note: Osmanthus seeds are of the physiological after-ripening type. They will germinate and emerge only after a relatively long period of sand storage, once the after-ripening process is complete. Therefore, to ensure the germination rate of osmanthus seeds, the seeds need to be stored.
