How do you propagate osmanthus seedlings by cuttings? When is the best time to propagate osmanthus seedlings by cuttings? We also ask experienced readers to help explain

Softwood cutting propagation of osmanthus has the advantages of easy material sourcing, simple operation, and a high survival rate. Therefore, Zhongdi Network has compiled the methods for propagating osmanthus seedlings by cuttings, and they are listed in detail below for readers' reference.

Step 1: Preparation of time and seedbed:
The best time for cutting propagation of osmanthus seedlings is from mid-September to mid-October. Choose a light loam texture for the cutting bed. The cutting bed is 120 cm wide and 25 cm high, with a ditch width of 40 cm. The soil must be fine and crumbly, the bed surface level, and the drainage ditches unobstructed. Build a 50 cm high small arch shed over the cutting bed, and above that build a shade shed 1.8 m above the bed surface with a light transmittance of 30%.

Step 2: Treatment of osmanthus cuttings:
You should select vigorous osmanthus trees free of pests and diseases for collecting cuttings, and cut semi-lignified softwood shoots of the current year from the middle and upper parts as cuttings. Cut the cuttings into small sections 8-10 cm long, keeping 2 leaves on the upper part with half of each leaf cut off. Cut the upper end of the cutting into a flat opening and the base into a slant, tie them into small bundles, then soak the part below 3 cm from the base in 50 mg/L naphthaleneacetic acid solution, take them out after 1 hour and insert them for cutting.

Step 3: Cutting of osmanthus branches:
Grade the cuttings by thickness and insert them in separate beds (sections). Plant spacing 5 cm, row spacing 10 cm. First use a wooden stick as thick as the cutting to make holes in the cutting bed, then insert the lower two-thirds of the cutting into the holes, and press the soil tightly around the cuttings. Finally, water the cutting bed thoroughly with carbendazim solution diluted 10,000 times.

Step 4: Management after cutting of osmanthus seedlings:
When there are no water droplets on the shed film and the bed soil is dry, spray water to maintain moisture. Cover the shade shed early and uncover it late, keep the relative humidity inside the shed above 85%, and control the temperature at 18°C-30°C. Spray 2000-times carbendazim solution once every 7 days. Loosen the soil frequently to maintain the permeability of the cutting bed and prevent the young roots of the cuttings from rotting due to lack of oxygen. Promptly remove sprouts at the base of the cuttings to reduce nutrient consumption.
Along with watering, spray 0.2% urea solution or potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution once every 10 days to promote root system and new shoot growth of the cuttings. In the spring of the following year, remove the shade shed, transplant to a field nursery in early summer, and in winter when the seedlings reach 30-50 cm in height they can be lifted from the nursery and planted in place.
