The giant panda is a mammal of the genus Ailuropoda in the bear family Ursidae, and it is also a rare species unique to China, long known as the national treasure. They are mainly found in the high mountains and deep valleys of Sichuan, Shaanxi, Gansu and other places, living in mountain bamboo forests at relatively high altitudes, and are one of the most representative wild animals in China.

The most striking feature of the giant panda is its sharply black-and-white coat, with the iconic black eye patches on its round face and thick, sturdy limbs, making it look endearingly clumsy and cute. Though it usually moves slowly, it is actually quite skilled at climbing trees, and when in danger it often climbs up a tree to hide.

In terms of diet, although the giant panda belongs to the order Carnivora, its food consists almost entirely of bamboo. To get enough nutrition, they spend a great deal of time eating every day, and their front paws have evolved a pseudo-thumb that helps them grasp bamboo branches. They also occasionally eat other plants or small animals, but bamboo is always the absolute mainstay.

In terms of living habits, giant pandas like to be active alone, are relatively gentle in temperament, and do not have a strict hibernation behavior. In the past, their survival faced great pressure because of habitat loss, but today, through measures such as establishing protected areas, carrying out captive breeding and rewilding and release, the results of population protection are gradually becoming apparent.

One more thing worth noting is that many people confuse the giant panda with the red panda. The red panda is much smaller, with reddish-brown fur and ringed patterns on its tail; it belongs to the family Ailuridae and is not the same kind of animal as the giant panda. When looking up panda information, first distinguish these two species so you are less likely to be misled by incorrect information.
