How to Keep Koi Fish: Master the Key Points of Water Quality, Feeding and Daily Care
Koi are an ornamental variety of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio), with brilliant body colors and highly varied patterns. Common strains include Kohaku, Taisho Sanke, and Showa Sanke, and they have long been known as living jewels of the water. They are relatively large, gentle in temperament, long-lived, and highly interactive with people, making them suitable for keeping in courtyard fish ponds or large aquariums.
Water quality is the key to keeping koi well. Koi have a large appetite and produce a lot of waste, so the water easily deteriorates. A fish pond needs to be equipped with a filtration system, and regular water changes must be maintained. The amount of water changed each time should not be too large, so as to avoid drastic fluctuations in water temperature and water quality. At the same time, sufficient dissolved oxygen in the water must be ensured. During hot, stuffy summer weather, aeration equipment can be turned on to keep the water fresh and stable.
Feeding must be done at fixed times and in fixed amounts. Koi are omnivorous fish and can be fed special compound feed, and can also be appropriately supplemented with clean bloodworms, vegetables and other foods. When the water temperature is low, the digestive capacity of koi weakens, so the amount fed should be reduced. Leftover food should be removed promptly to prevent water pollution.
In daily management, observe the fish's condition frequently. If white spots on the body surface, congestion, gasping at the surface, or loss of appetite occur, they should be isolated promptly and the cause investigated, consulting experienced keepers if necessary. Before new fish are introduced into the pond, they must first go through water acclimation to avoid disease caused by excessive temperature differences. As long as the water quality is stable, feeding is reasonable, and management is careful, koi will grow healthily and display beautiful body colors and posture.
