Koi are ornamental fish developed from carp (Cyprinus carpio) through long-term selective breeding, with vivid body colors and varied patterns; common strains include Kohaku, Taisho Sanke, and Showa Sanshoku. They are suitable both for courtyard ponds and for aquarium keeping, have a relatively long lifespan, and are fairly adaptable to their environment, but keeping them well still requires mastering the basic methods.

When keeping koi, the first thing to manage is water quality. The water should remain clear with sufficient dissolved oxygen, so filtration and aeration equipment is generally needed, along with regular water changes; the amount changed each time should not be too large, to avoid drastic fluctuations in water temperature and quality. When kept in courtyard ponds, rainwater and sewage must also be prevented from flowing in, and extra care should be taken during high temperatures in summer and low temperatures in winter.

Feeding should be done at fixed times and in fixed amounts, mainly with special compound feed, and vegetable matter and other plant-based bait can also be added appropriately. Each feeding should be only as much as the fish can finish fairly quickly, and leftover bait should be removed promptly to prevent it from spoiling the water. When the water temperature is low, koi have a weaker appetite, so feeding should be reduced accordingly.

In daily care, observe the fish's activity and body surface condition. If abnormalities such as gasping at the surface, rubbing against the tank, congestion on the body surface, or white spots appear, isolate and treat them promptly. Before new fish are put into the pond, it is best to first acclimatize them to temperature and water to avoid stress. As long as the water quality is stable, feeding is regular, and stocking density is reasonable, koi generally get sick less often and their ornamental effect will be better.
