When Does Osmanthus Bloom? A Full Analysis of Flowering Patterns and Variety Differences
Osmanthus is an evergreen small tree or shrub of the genus Osmanthus in the family Oleaceae, known for its rich, sweet fragrance, and is a traditional ornamental and edible flowering plant in China. Its full bloom period is generally from September to October each autumn, which happens to correspond to the eighth month of the lunar calendar, hence the long-standing folk saying that osmanthus is fragrant in the eighth lunar month. When temperatures are suitable and the difference between day and night temperatures is pronounced, the flowers bloom evenly and fragrantly.
The flowering period is closely related to the variety. The common Golden Osmanthus, Silver Osmanthus and Red Osmanthus all belong to the autumn osmanthus group, mostly blooming only once a year in autumn; among them, Golden Osmanthus and Silver Osmanthus are usually slightly earlier, while Red Osmanthus is a little later, with flower colors of golden yellow, creamy white and orange-red respectively. Four Seasons Osmanthus is rather special, as it can bloom several times within a year, though its flowers are somewhat sparse and its fragrance is lighter. When identifying varieties, flower color and plant shape are the most intuitive basis.
The specific blooming time is also affected by climate and region. Warm regions tend to see earlier blooming, while northern areas or places at higher altitude are later; autumn temperatures and the amount of rain can both advance or delay the flowering period, and the same osmanthus tree may bloom at times differing by ten days to half a month in different years.
If your own osmanthus is slow to bloom, common reasons include insufficient light, too much nitrogen fertilizer with a lack of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, improper watering, or the tree still being too young to have reached the flowering stage. To make it bloom on schedule, ensure adequate sunlight in normal times, supplement phosphorus and potassium fertilizer appropriately before autumn, and for potted osmanthus take care not to let it lack fertilizer or water; with proper care, filling the whole yard with fragrance when it blooms is not difficult.
