When osmanthus (sweet osmanthus) blooms, its fragrance spreads everywhere. Nowadays many people like to keep a potted osmanthus at home. Osmanthus also carries fine symbolism: plant an osmanthus by your gate and you will show wealth and status before others. It is increasingly loved by flower lovers, but during care many problems easily arise, such as slow growth, failure to bloom, and yellow leaves

Osmanthus is a woody flowering plant and grows slowly by nature, so its growth is not very obvious. If it barely changes for several years, neither taller nor fuller, and stays half-dead, not lush and not blooming, then the problem lies in your care method.

To grow osmanthus well, we should pay attention to these points

1. Acidic soil

The osmanthus tree likes slightly acidic, well-aerated humus soil. You can use humus soil or grass peat soil mixed with granular soil, which is loose and breathable and very suitable for osmanthus growth. If the potting soil is on the alkaline side, or is compacted, with poor water and air permeability, it is very hard for osmanthus to grow well.

It is best to water with ferrous sulfate once a month, and the amount must be small; a ratio of 1:1500 will do. Too much easily burns the seedlings. It improves the soil's acidity and alkalinity and adds iron. When the potting soil is compacted and not breathable, repot or loosen the soil in time.

2. Fertilizing

Osmanthus quite likes fertilizer and likes organic fertilizer best. We can use organic fertilizer we have fermented ourselves. During the osmanthus growing season, fertilize once or twice a month. You can ferment cake fertilizer water or animal manure such as chicken manure and sheep manure at home, and after full fermentation give it to the osmanthus. This kind of organic fertilizer has slow potency and more organic matter, does not easily compact the soil, and is very beneficial to osmanthus growth. Applying organic fertilizer can make osmanthus bloom more and smell fragrant

If the fertility is not sufficient, the branches will be thin and weak, and the flowers will be few and not fragrant

3. Watering

Osmanthus likes an environment with sufficient light; even in summer it does not need shading. During the osmanthus growing season, watering must be sufficient. When the potting soil has dried halfway, water it thoroughly right away. In summer, the temperature is high and transpiration is strong, so the potting soil dries too fast; it is best to water once a day. If the potting soil dries too fast, increase the number of waterings to make sure the soil does not lack water

4. Temperature, climate and environment

The osmanthus tree is a tropical and subtropical plant. If it is planted in an area that is not originally suitable for osmanthus growth, it is very easy for it to grow poorly or not grow at all. So we should do our utmost to create a growing environment for osmanthus that imitates its original environment; only then will the osmanthus plant be sturdy, grow vigorously, and bloom abundantly and fragrantly

5、

Pruning. Osmanthus has a well-developed root system and strong sprouting ability. A mature osmanthus tree pushes out new shoots twice a year. To keep the plant sturdy, during the osmanthus growing season prune and pinch back often to remove apical dominance, making the branches and trunk thicker. At the same time, prune away overly long branches, diseased branches, weak branches, and so on, reducing nutrient consumption. With good ventilation and breathability, more nutrients can be supplied for flowering, so it blooms more and smells fragrant

Grow potted osmanthus this way, and it will bloom nonstop year after year, with thousands of flowers opening. If you keep one at home, the fragrance fills the house and lingers endlessly
