The Gotenzakura Kohaku koi is a variety within the Koromo (robed) koi group, generally believed to have been developed by crossbreeding Kohaku and Asagi koi. It has a red-and-white base, and the scales on the red patches have blue-black net pattern along their edges, which makes the red appear deeper and more vivid; the overall look resembles cherry blossoms in full bloom, hence the name.

In judging and appreciation, the Gotenzakura Kohaku koi is valued for a clean white base, deep red patches with clear boundaries, and an even, consistent net pattern. The larger and more uniform the patches, the better the ornamental effect usually is. Since the pattern is the soul of this variety, when selecting one you can focus on whether the depth variations in the red areas are natural and harmonious.

Keeping methods are similar to those for ordinary koi: they need a larger body of water and a complete filtration system, keeping the water clean and stable. Feed high-quality artificial feed daily, on a fixed schedule and in fixed amounts, to avoid leftover food spoiling the water. Watch for water temperature changes when the seasons change, and the temperature difference when changing water should not be too great.

These koi are likewise prone to common diseases such as white spot disease and parasites, so you should regularly observe their body surface, appetite and swimming behavior. Once abnormalities such as white spots, congestion or scratching against the tank appear on the fish, isolate and treat them early. Managing water quality well from the source is the key to keeping Gotenzakura Kohaku koi successfully.
