Hi Utsuri is one of the representative varieties of Utsuri koi, belonging with Shiro Utsuri and Ki Utsuri to the Utsuri family bred from the Karasu koi line. Its body color has a jet-black base marked with large patches of bright red, with black and red sharply distinct, creating a strong contrast as it swims and making it highly prized for viewing.

From an appreciation standpoint, a good Hi Utsuri emphasizes the balance between the sumi (black) quality and the hi (red) plates. An ideal individual has glossy jet-black sumi, deeply colored and evenly distributed red, clearly defined patch edges, naturally arranged patterns near the head and dorsal fin, and a harmonious black-to-red ratio over the whole body. Too much sumi looks dull, while too much hi weakens the contrast unique to Utsuri.

In daily keeping, Hi Utsuri has habits similar to other koi and favors clean water rich in dissolved oxygen. Keeping it requires a stable filtration system and regular, moderate water changes to avoid sharp fluctuations in water temperature and quality. Feed mainly a high-quality formulated diet, and reduce the amount appropriately when the water temperature is low to prevent digestive problems in the fish.

When the seasons change or water quality deteriorates, Hi Utsuri is susceptible to parasites and bacteria, showing abnormalities such as white spots, scratching against the tank, and reduced appetite. Observe the fish's body surface and swimming behavior often, isolate and treat promptly when abnormalities appear, and improve water quality at the same time, so that Hi Utsuri can maintain healthy body color and vitality over the long term.
