An Introduction to the Variety Characteristics and Keeping Methods of the Blue Robe Koi

The Blue Robe koi is a representative variety among the "robe" type koi. It is a freshwater ornamental carp, generally believed to have been bred by combining the Kohaku (red and white) koi with bloodlines from the Chagoi (light yellow) system. It has a white base with red markings, and the scales on the red patches have pale blue edges that join into a net-like pattern, making it look as though the red patches are covered by a layer of blue cloth, which is how it got its name.

Its most striking feature is that the scale edges within the red patches show blue borders, forming a clear net-like texture. When appraising it, the main things to look at are whether the white ground is clean and fine, whether the red patches are thick and even, and whether the blue net pattern is neat. Individuals vary considerably; the more evenly the blue markings are distributed and the smoother the outline of the markings, the higher the ornamental value usually is.

Its keeping methods are similar to those for ordinary koi, and it is suitable for ponds or large aquariums with good filtration and ample space. In daily care, keep the water temperature stable and avoid drastic fluctuations, and change the water regularly to keep the water quality clear, which helps with color development and growth. Feed mainly with specialized compound feed, at fixed times and in fixed amounts, and you may add a small amount of easily digestible supplementary food.

The Blue Robe koi's disease resistance is similar to that of other koi, and when water quality is poor it is prone to infection by white spot disease, ciliate parasitic diseases such as Trichodina, or bacterial diseases. Normally, watch for abnormalities such as a white film on the fish body, rubbing against the tank, gasping at the surface, or loss of appetite, and isolate and treat diseased fish promptly. The key to daily prevention lies in stabilizing water quality, controlling density, and feeding reasonably.
