An Introduction to the Characteristics of the Ki Utsuri Koi Variety and Daily Rearing Methods
The Ki Utsuri koi is a classic variety in the Utsurimono group. Its whole body has a black base color, with large yellow patches distributed over the body surface; the black-and-yellow contrast is striking and highly ornamental. Along with Shiro Utsuri and Aka Utsuri, it belongs to the Utsurimono category, all of which are koi with a black base overlaid with patches of different colors.
From an appreciation standpoint, a high-quality Ki Utsuri koi requires thick, even sumi (black markings), large and full yellow patches with clear edges, and markings that are evenly distributed on both sides of the body. The head usually carries sumi markings, which is an important feature of the Utsurimono group, and the striped sumi on the pectoral fins is also a part often examined when judging quality.
Within the Utsurimono family, Ki Utsuri is one of the earlier types to appear, and through selective breeding it later gradually gave rise to the more popular Shiro Utsuri. Today Ki Utsuri is relatively uncommon on the market, but its unique black-and-yellow character is still favored by many enthusiasts.
In terms of rearing, the Ki Utsuri koi has basically the same requirements as ordinary koi. It prefers clean water with sufficient dissolved oxygen; the filtration system should be kept running normally, and the water should be changed regularly. Feeding should mainly use special compound koi feed, and when the water temperature is low, the amount fed should be reduced to prevent leftover feed from fouling the water.
Most common koi diseases are related to water quality. In daily care, observe the fish's condition; if behaviors such as rubbing against the tank, an increase in white spots on the body surface, or abnormal mucus occur, determine the cause as early as possible and treat it accordingly. Good water quality management and quarantine of new fish can effectively reduce the probability of disease.
