Masked Kohaku is a distinctive pattern type among Kohaku koi
Masked Kohaku is a pattern form among Kohaku koi. Kohaku koi have a white base with red markings, and are one of the most representative varieties of koi. When the red markings cover a large area of the head, as if putting a red mask on the fish, people call it Masked Kohaku.
Unlike Tancho Kohaku, which has only a single cluster of red markings on top of the head, Masked Kohaku has a larger range of red markings on the head, often wrapping even around the eyes in red. When appreciating this type of fish, besides looking at the distribution of the markings, you should also check whether the edges of the red markings are clear and whether the color is deep and even, and whether the white base is pure white and fine. Because the head is largely covered by red markings, its ornamental style is clearly different from types such as Tancho and Lipstick, and each has its own enthusiasts.
In terms of keeping, it is basically the same as ordinary Kohaku koi. They like clean water with sufficient dissolved oxygen, and the water temperature should be kept stable, avoiding sudden changes. Daily feeding should be regular and measured, adjusting the amount of food according to water temperature and the condition of the fish. When changing water, pay attention to dechlorinating the water and changing it in small amounts several times to reduce stress on the fish.
Masked Kohaku is also susceptible to common parasites and bacterial diseases such as white spot disease, Chilodonella, and Lernaea, and is especially prone to disease when water temperature fluctuates greatly and water quality deteriorates. Usually you should frequently observe the fish's activity and feeding status. If you find situations such as rubbing against the tank, clamped fins, or abnormalities on the body surface, isolate and treat them promptly. Maintaining good water quality is the key to disease prevention.
