Tancho Sanke koi is a rather distinctive variety of koi, combining the characteristics of the Tancho and Taisho Sanke lines. It has a white base, with a round red patch in the very center of the head resembling the red crest on a red-crowned crane, and the body also bears the sumi (black) markings characteristic of Taisho Sanke; the three colors of white, red and black set each other off, giving it high ornamental value.

When judging this type of koi, the red patch on the head is the most critical point; an ideal red patch should be round, centered and clearly outlined, and should not spread to around the eyes or cheeks. The sumi markings are best concentrated on the back, and it is preferable that no black spots appear on the head. The white base should be clean and free of stray color, with the red and black sharply contrasting; add to this a well-proportioned body and an elegant swimming posture, and only then does it count as an outstanding individual.

In terms of keeping, Tancho Sanke koi have habits similar to ordinary koi; they like environments with ample dissolved oxygen and stable water quality, and are suitable for larger ponds or well-filtered aquariums. Feed them daily with specialized koi food, at set times and in set amounts, promptly remove leftover food and feces, and keep the water clean.

It should be noted that koi with a white base are relatively sensitive to water quality; when their condition declines or the water fluctuates greatly, they are prone to infestation by common parasites such as white spot disease, chilodonella and trichodina. Normally you should change the water regularly, maintain the filtration system well, and observe the fish's activity and body surface often; if you find behaviors such as scraping against the tank, clamped fins, or white spots or abnormal mucus appearing on the body, isolate and treat them promptly, and only then can Tancho Sanke koi maintain their brilliant ornamental effect over the long term.
