The Aka Sanshoku koi is a variant within the Taisho Sanshoku line. Unlike the common white-based Taisho Sanshoku, it uses red as the body base color, with white markings and sumi black patches distributed over it. The three colors of red, white and black set each other off, and it takes its name from its reddish base. This variety is relatively rare among koi and has high ornamental value, making it popular with many enthusiasts.

When selecting Aka Sanshoku koi, the general standard is that the base red should be rich, vivid and even, the white patches clean and clearly defined, and the sumi patches neatly edged with a deep, steady color. The distribution of the patterns is also key: individuals whose markings on the head, back and sides are natural and harmonious, with good overall balance, have better quality. In terms of body shape, those with a smooth back line and well-proportioned build are preferred.

Day-to-day keeping is similar to that of ordinary koi. Keeping the water clean and stable is the first requirement; elevated ammonia nitrogen and nitrite in the water will affect the fish's health and color development. Koi are quite sensitive to sudden changes in water temperature, so water changes should be small and frequent, avoiding a single large water change. Feed mainly on high-quality compound feed, with a suitable amount of natural food mixed in; balanced nutrition helps make the body color more vivid.

Like other koi, Aka Sanshoku koi are prone to parasitic diseases such as white spot disease, Trichodina and anchor worms when water quality is poor or temperature fluctuates, and may also develop bacterial problems such as gill rot and fin rot. Observe them regularly in normal times; once abnormal signs such as scraping against the tank, gasping at the surface, or white spots or congestion on the body surface appear, the sick fish should be isolated promptly and the water disinfected and adjusted.
