What Fruit Is the Star Apple? Characteristics and Growing Tips Explained in One Article
The star apple is the fruit borne by an evergreen tree of the Sapotaceae family. When cut open, the flesh displays a radial star-shaped pattern, which is how it got its name; in many places it is also called the star apple or milk fruit. It originated in tropical America, and today it has been introduced and cultivated in warm, humid regions of China such as Hainan, Guangdong and Yunnan. It is a rather distinctive tropical fruit.
In appearance, the star apple fruit is nearly round with smooth skin. When ripe, there are two common types, purple-red and pale green. The flesh is white and semi-transparent with a fine texture, the juice carries a faint milky fragrance, and the sweetness is mild. Note that fruit that is not fully ripe contains white latex and tastes astringent, so it is generally eaten only after it has ripened fully and softened.
As for cultivation, the star apple prefers a hot, humid environment and is not cold-tolerant; when winter temperatures are low, young trees are easily damaged by cold. It is suited to open-field cultivation in tropical and subtropical regions, while in more northerly areas it can be grown in containers with good winter insulation. It adapts to a wide range of soils, but grows best in fertile soil with a deep layer and good drainage. For propagation, sowing or grafting is mostly used, and grafted seedlings usually bear fruit earlier and with more stable quality.
Besides its edible value, the star apple has an upright tree form and glossy leaves, and the undersides of the leaves give off a golden sheen in sunlight, so it is also quite ornamental and is often used as a courtyard or street tree for landscaping. When choosing fruit day to day, you can press the skin lightly; a slightly soft feel means it has ripened properly. After buying, just keep it in a cool place and eat it as soon as possible.
