Lilac is a deciduous shrub or small tree of the genus Syringa in the family Oleaceae, and it is also a common spring ornamental flowering tree in northern China. It usually blooms in April and May each year in spring; in warm southern regions the flowering period is slightly earlier, while in cold northern regions it may be a little later, and the overall flowering period lasts about half a month to a month. The flowers of lilac are small and densely clustered, often borne in panicles at the tips of the branches; the flower colors are mainly light purple and white, and the fragrance is elegant and rich, noticeable from far away. Common varieties include Syringa oblata, Syringa oblata var. alba, Syringa reticulata subsp. amurensis, and Syringa oblata 'Siji' (four-season lilac), among which the four-season lilac has a longer flowering period, and some plants can bloom again in summer and autumn. Lilac prefers an environment with plenty of sunlight, deep soil, and good drainage; it is relatively cold-hardy and is a commonly used tree species for courtyard and park landscaping in the north. In daily care, be sure to provide sufficient light, avoid planting in low-lying waterlogged spots, and after flowering appropriately prune off spent flowers and overly dense branches to help the plant accumulate nutrients and favor blooming the following year. When lilacs planted at home fail to bloom for a long time, it is mostly related to insufficient light, too much nitrogen fertilizer, or improper pruning; you can first move the plant to a sunny spot and then adjust the water and fertilizer management. Lilac not only has high ornamental value, but its flowers can also be used to extract essence; whether for courtyard beautification or street-tree landscaping, it is a very popular flowering tree.
