A Detailed Guide to Snow Pea Planting Methods and Precautions

I. Cultivation Methods

1. Soaking the seeds.

Before sowing, soak the snow pea seeds in salt water for 8 to 12 hours, with a salt water concentration of 25%, as this helps the seeds germinate quickly.

2. Sowing the seeds in holes.

Before sowing, first let the soaked seeds dry off, then sow them by dibbling; sow just a few snow pea seeds per pot, and it is best to keep a certain number of cm between each seed.

3. Covering with soil and watering.

After the seeds are dibbled in place, gently cover them with a thin layer of sandy soil, then water immediately and water thoroughly.

4. Germination.

Under normal circumstances, snow peas will germinate in three to five days.

5. Thinning the seedlings.

Thinning should be decided according to the actual situation; if the plants are growing too densely together, then thinning is needed.

6. Top-dressing.

Snow peas have a relatively high demand for fertilizer; 20 days after planting snow peas, fertilizer should be applied, and after that, fertilizer should be applied about once every 10 days.

7. Setting up trellises.

When the snow pea plants grow to a height of about 15-20 cm, trellises should begin to be set up; the purpose of this is to prevent the snow pea plants from falling over.

8. Harvesting.

About 20 days after flowering, they can be harvested!

II. Precautions

Snow peas like plenty of sunlight; when light conditions are good, they also flower earlier. In fact, after flowering, snow peas need longer light exposure and stronger light intensity.

Snow peas need a large amount of water throughout the entire growth period. If water is insufficient, then the seedling emergence period will be prolonged, and the pods will also mature early, thus affecting the quality and yield of the snow peas.

Snow peas are not picky about soil, but they grow better in well-drained, loose, and fertile soil, with a pH value between 6.0 and 7.2.

Snow peas have a relatively high demand for fertilizer. When fertilizing snow peas, apply more base fertilizer together with phosphorus and potassium fertilizers; under normal circumstances, nitrogen fertilizer should not be applied.
