The elephant ear (Alocasia) has broad, large, glossy green leaves and is a common indoor foliage plant. If its leaves turn yellow during care, it is most often related to environmental conditions such as watering, light and temperature, and the cause needs to be judged according to the specific situation.

Improper watering is the most common cause. Overwatering causes water to accumulate in the pot soil for a long time, which obstructs root respiration, and the leaves often begin to yellow gradually from the lower part; long-term lack of water tends to dry out and yellow the leaf tips and leaf margins. As for light, the elephant ear likes a semi-shaded environment. Strong direct sunlight in summer easily scorches the leaves, while placing it in a too-dark corner for a long time also makes the leaves fade and yellow due to insufficient light.

Too low a temperature can also cause yellow leaves. When the room temperature is low in winter, the plant is easily chilled, showing yellowed, softened and drooping leaves. In addition, when the soil has not been changed for a long time or nutrients are insufficient, the old leaves at the bottom will yellow first; this is normal metabolism and generally nothing to worry about too much.

After discovering yellow leaves, you can first check the dry and wet state of the pot soil and the plant's position, adjust the watering frequency in time, and water thoroughly only after the surface of the pot soil has dried. At the same time, move the plant to a place with bright, scattered light and avoid direct exposure to the hot sun. Leaves that have yellowed severely can be cut off together with the petiole; the sap is irritating when cutting leaves, so be careful not to let the sap touch the skin, eyes or mouth.

In daily care, keep the pot soil alternately dry and moist and avoid water accumulation, appropriately supplement with dilute liquid fertilizer during the growing season, and pay attention to keeping warm and protecting against cold in winter. Doing these few things well can effectively reduce the occurrence of yellow leaves and keep the elephant ear (Alocasia) glossy green and upright.
