Introduction to the Apple Varieties Takuki and Saika and the Differences in Taste
Apple winter management is relatively difficult, but this fruit has fairly high nutritional value, and there are also many varieties. Do you know the two apple varieties Takuki and Saika? What kind of differences are there between them?
Since the variety was registered in 2004, it can be considered one of the most representative yellow apple varieties in Aomori Prefecture in recent years. The size is about 300g to 400g, and the fruit size is not very stable, but the proportion of large fruits is on the high side.
The outer skin is light yellow, and only the part exposed to the sun turns slightly red.
Takuki has a weak tartness, is sweet, fragrant and crisp, and is also called the "honey peach apple" in Taiwan, China. It is juicy and delicious and has been very well received.
Takuki was produced by crossing the king of red apples, "Fuji," with the representative of yellow apples, "Orin," and is a rapidly rising new star variety.
Where does the "honey" in "honey apple" come from?
① Honey juice is injected into the apple with a syringe.
② A natural phenomenon of fully ripe apples
③ A phenomenon produced when sap seeps into the apple.
Saika (SAIKA)
The harvest period is around mid-September, the weight is about 300g, and the skin is bright red and eye-catching. The flesh tends to be white, and the tartness is relatively strong, making it a sweet-and-sour red apple. The author's impression the first time eating "Saika" was that it is very similar to our wax apple in Taiwan, China! Saika and wax apple are both sweet and sour, and taste refreshing; the only difference is that Saika is a bit crisper than wax apple.
Because Saika has a strong tartness, it is very suitable for making Western-style pastries or for use in cooking. However, products processed using Saika must be labeled with the registered variety name "AORI 9" (Aomori Apple No. 9), rather than "Saika."
The name "Saika" may only be used on fresh fruit.
Why is there such a restriction? Because before the apple "Saika" was registered as a trademark, another product had already used the name "Saika." Fortunately, that previously registered product was not in the vegetable or fruit category, so only Saika in the state of "fresh fruit" can use the name "Saika."
