Corn Replanting Methods and Precautions

As temperatures rise, corn enters its planting season, and during the corn planting process, missing seedlings are quite common, so many farmers choose to replant corn. So how should corn be replanted? What should be paid attention to? Let's learn about it together.

I. Corn Replanting Methods

Corn replanting is a supplement to gaps in the rotation planting. Correct replanting can not only increase corn income but also improve land utilization, and for farmers it can also increase income. Therefore, when farmers replant corn, they must master scientific replanting methods to avoid suffering losses again. Let's take a look at corn replanting methods and precautions below.

1. Variety selection

When replanting, choose a variety whose growth period is 10—15 days shorter than the originally planted variety. If low-temperature weather occurs after sowing and the emergence time is prolonged, the growth period of the selected variety should also be appropriately shortened to ensure it is consistent with the growth period of the original variety.

2. Seed treatment

For replanting with a hole-punching tool, in order to ensure the seeds emerge as soon as possible, before sowing the seeds should first undergo seed selection, coating, and sun-drying before sowing. When replanting, first pre-sprout the seeds, then sow. Note that the seeds must be sown on moist soil, and the covering soil should be less than 3 cm and then pressed firm, which can prevent the seedlings from drying out.

3. Replanting

If there is one missing seedling between rows, then there is no need to replant, but if 2 or more seedlings are missing in a row, then replant one in the middle; if 3 are missing, replant 2 hills, and so on.

II. Precautions

1. When replanting, be sure to replant on moist soil. The covering soil should not be too thin; within 3 cm is best. After covering with soil, press it firm to prevent the seedlings from “drying out.” When replanting seedlings, also pay attention to prevention. Generally, when one seedling is missing between rows, there is no need to replant; if 2 seedlings are missing in a row, then one can be replanted in the middle; if 3 are missing, replant 2.

2. The distance between the first hill and the last hill of the replanted seeds and the corn seedlings that have already emerged should be more than 1.5 times the normal plant spacing, to prevent large and small seedlings from competing for water and fertilizer and shading each other from sunlight. The plant spacing between replanted corn can follow the normal plant spacing required by the variety.
