Causes of cabbage rot

Finding rotten cabbage when growing it is very annoying. The causes of cabbage rot are related to various factors, mainly the following. When you find it, it is best to first understand how the rot happened before trying to solve it, so the results will be better.

1. Root rot

Root rot is one of the most common diseases in cabbage. Many cabbages carry this pathogen themselves, and it is easily triggered every early spring or in humid seasons. This kind of rot usually has a smell, and it is mainly concentrated at and below the soil surface, so it is relatively easy to identify. For diseases like this, it is generally recommended to replace the seeds promptly in subsequent plantings, then treat with chemicals; in the early stage, it is best to use some preventative treatments.

2. Water rot

Water rot is mostly concentrated in land types near paddy fields, and this is generally caused by the arrival of the rainy season or severely waterlogged soil. Cabbage does not have a high daily watering requirement, so water easily accumulates in cabbage plots. When cabbage is soaked in water for a long time, its outer surface is gradually eroded, then rots, and finally water rot forms. Because water rot does not take long to develop, it often appears in batches, so special attention must be paid to soil drainage at this time.

3. Fertilizer rot

Fertilizer is an important nutrient source for vegetables. At present, many people in rural areas still have the habit of using farmyard manure, but this farmyard manure is not very standardized, and much of it is not fully decomposed. This kind of fertilizer will continue to decompose after planting. If it comes into contact with cabbage at this time, the cabbage will also be affected by the reactions during its decomposition period, ultimately causing rot. When there is too much fertilizer, it can also cause this condition in cabbage, because the nutrients absorbed by the cabbage exceed its needs, ultimately leading to rot.

4. Insect pests

This type of rot is relatively difficult to prevent. Cabbage has many layers, which helps insects hide. When some insect pests survive on cabbage for a long time, their damage to the cabbage and the contamination from their excrement will cause the cabbage to rot. In addition, some insects themselves like rotting environments, and will even actively create such an environment, so in the end there is naturally more cabbage rot caused by insect pests.

The above are some causes of cabbage rot. Many of these can be prevented. Growing this crop mainly relies on prevention, because every disease outbreak means an abnormal loss.
