Key management points for sesame during the capsule-setting stage

The capsule-setting stage of sesame is the period when its vegetative growth and reproductive growth advance side by side. Management during this period is the key to achieving a high yield. So what measures should be taken during the capsule-setting stage of sesame to increase yield? Let's take a look together at the key management points for sesame during the capsule-setting stage.

1. Reasonable topdressing

Topdressing during the flowering stage of sesame can promote flower bud differentiation in sesame. A fertilization method combining soil application and foliar spraying can be adopted. Generally, for plots with relatively good soil fertility, applying urea once at the early flowering stage is sufficient, while for plots with poor soil fertility, one additional application is needed, generally applying 7.5-10 kg of urea per mu each time. From the bud stage to the early flowering stage of sesame, fertilizer should be applied heavily; during flowering and capsule setting, supplementary application should be made according to the seedlings' condition. Foliar fertilizer should be sprayed twice at the early flowering stage, each time spraying 150-200 grams of potassium dihydrogen phosphate and 100 grams of borax per mu, diluted with 50 kg of water before spraying.

2. Preventing waterlogging and resisting drought

If sesame is waterlogged during the capsule-setting stage, in mild cases it causes an increase in shriveled grains, and in severe cases it wilts and dies. Therefore, after rain, ditches should be drained promptly to reduce field humidity and ensure normal growth and development of sesame. However, it should not be too dry either, as this will also affect yield and quality. Therefore, when drought occurs, irrigation should be carried out promptly. Irrigation should preferably be done in the morning and evening, avoiding the high-temperature period as much as possible, and flood irrigation should be avoided.

3. Topping at the right time

In the late full-bloom stage of sesame, the leaf nodes at the top of the main stem cluster together. When growth is nearly stopping, choose a sunny morning to remove 3-4 cm from the top. This removes the apical dominance of sesame, allowing nutrients to be concentrated for capsule growth and promoting improvements in yield and quality.

4. Preventing and controlling pests and diseases

The main pests and diseases during sesame growth are bacterial wilt and leaf spot, so prevention and control should focus on them. At the early flowering stage, carbendazim or miebingwei can be sprayed for control, once every half month, for 2-3 consecutive applications. For aphids, imidacloprid-type pesticides such as Dagongchen and Yibianjing can be selected for spraying, with good results.
